How To Tell If Kittens Are Abandoned & Need Your Help
Finding a litter of kittens can tug at your heartstrings, but before you scoop them up, it’s important to determine if they’re truly abandoned. Here’s what to do.
Leave the kittens alone for now, unless they’re in immediate danger, like being injured or alone on a busy road. Mother cats often leave their kittens for short periods while hunting for food or taking a break. Monitor the nest from a safe distance for 12 to 18 hours. Younger kittens can be left alone for several hours while their mom tends to her needs.
.
Look for signs of the mother’s return. You can sprinkle flour around the nest and check for paw prints later. If the mother has returned to feed the kittens, you’ll likely see paw prints in the flour. Don’t panic if some of the kittens seem to disappear. Caring mothers sometimes move their young to a safer location if they feel the nest is compromised.
However, if you’ve observed the nest for a significant amount of time and the kittens are dirty, crying constantly (indicating hunger), lethargic, and unresponsive, these signs, along with a lack of motherly activity, suggest the kittens might be abandoned.
